This is why it was depressing that the Cinema Company was forced to close the Városi Mozi in December 1999, as multiplexes were gaining ground. In 2007 and 2008, the Kecskemét Fringe and the World Music Festival opened the building, which was in a deplorable state at the time, to the public for one day each. Since then, its condition has only deteriorated, while the main avenue of the city, Rákóczi út, has been renewed. Only the Városi Mozi building stood out in the beautifully restored surroundings.

In 2012, Mayor Gábor Zombor decided to renovate the building with the help of European Union funding, and it will house the Leskowsky Instrument Collection and the László Kelemen Chamber Theatre. This will create the Tourism Centre of the Hírös City.

The main exhibition spaces of the Leskowsky Instrument Collection will be located in the building's balcony auditorium and the old engine house, while the old Studio Cinema will house the music education and training room and the percussion exhibition. This room remained the Studio after the conversion. The management of the instrument collection has been involved in the process from the conception of the idea, through the design and construction, to the realisation of the project.

During the works, the building had to be demolished down to the bricks and almost beyond. The designers, under the leadership of Gábor Farkas, and the contractors have worked very hard to restore the monument to its original form, to accommodate the appropriate functions for the needs of the operators and to keep the building structurally sound, while keeping costs within reasonable limits.

The following series of pictures shows some of the phases of the renovation works.
